Education Research Center Title: Self-Management for Chronic Conditions: Lessons learned from Dissertation to Retirement Description: This workshop will focus on Community Based Self-Management Programs for Chronic Conditions. The actual workshop content will be largely determined by the participants. We will begin by taking a short (very short) assessment of topics that the participants would like to discuss. These may include but are not limited to working, working across cultures, self-tailoring, use of self-efficacy theory, translation of research into practice, outcome instruments, evaluation design, and/or difficulties of meta analysis. While there are objectives for this workshop, they may change based on the needs and desires of the participants. This will be a discussion. No power-point allowed.
Monday, March 9th, 2:00-5:00 p.m. Workshop Fee: $50 Workshop Leader: Matt Martens, Ph.D., Associate Professor, University of Memphis Title: Motivational Interviewing-Based Strategies for Health Behavior Change
Description: The purpose of this workshop is to provide an overview of Motivational Interviewing (MI)–based strategies for promoting health behavior change. MI was developed as an intervention for those experiencing problems associated with substance abuse, but in recent years its use has spread to other health behavior domains. One of the unique aspects of MI involves its focus on helping clinicians work with patients who express initial ambivalence about changing their behaviors. A number of studies have shown that MI-based interventions can be effective either alone or in conjunction with other treatments.

First-Timers and Student Event: AAHB is committed to ensuring that new members, first time attendees and students feel welcome athe the Annual Meeting. Please don't miss the opening poster session and reception on Sunday night. It's a great way to meet folks informally before the meeting begins. And then, join the AAHB leaders for breakfast on Monday morning at the Breakfast Roundtables (see below). This event is held just for you. It's a great time to come meet the AAHB leaders, hear more about the organization - and enjoy a great free breakfast at the same time! And remember to take advantage of the small meeting venue throughout the meeting -- introduce yourself to others! Also, a great way for students to reduce their cost at the meeting (or anyone else looking to reduce costs) is to find others to share a villa. There are two and three bedroom villas, that will sleep four and six adults respectively. Go the the Sea Pines website and check out the options. While the taxes relate to the overall room/villa rate, the resort fee is a per person fee. Monday (March 9th): Meet the Leaders The Monday breakfast roundtables offer an opportunity to meet, have breakfast, and network with pioneers and leaders in health behavior research. They are especially designed for first-time conference attendees, new or junior members, and students. We hope you will take this opportunity to introduce yourself and let us know who you are. Each of the tables will be facilitated by senior members of the American Academy of Health Behavior. This is a great opportunity to meet the leaders of the academy and learn more about what the academy offers. Tuesday (March 10th): Meet the Conference Speakers The Tuesday roundtables offer an opportunity to meet, have breakfast, and network with conference speakers. They are especially designed for all conference attendees who want to have extended, personal conversation with a conference speaker.
