2011-12 Application Instructions

The Judy K Black Early Career Research Award commemorates the life and honors the memory of the wife of one of The Academy’s founders and past presidents, Dr. David R. “Randy” Black. Judy died tragically in a traffic accident on January 31, 2003. This award of the American Academy of Health Behavior (AAHB) recognizes an exceptionally promising early-career health behavior researcher that is an AAHB member and involved in innovative and rigorous research that makes an important contribution to science or practice.

Qualifications:  Affiliate or Full AAHB members that are early-career (i.e., < 5 years postdoctoral or other terminal degree, doctoral degree not required), as of December 15th of the year in which the submission is made.

Deadline for 2012 Award:  AAHB Members meeting the award qualifiations that wish to be considered for the Judy K Black Award need to submit the following information by November 21, 2011.

(1) Please submit the following information to the Chair of the Professional Development Council (Renee Umstattd, Renee_Umstattd@Baylor.edu)

a. A cover letter stating your intent to be considered for receipt of the Judy K Black Early Career Research Award AND describing why you believe you should be recognized as an exceptionally promising early-career health behavior researcher, including a description of your research agenda and accomplishments.

b. 1-2 reference letter(s) from current AAHB Members or Fellows.

c.  A current Curriculum Vitae that minimally documents the applicant’s peer-reviewed publications (including the impact factor for journals); grant applications that have been submitted, scored, and/or received; research presentations; awards; and documentation of the applicant’s training / mentorship of graduate students.

d.  Absence of any of these items does not prevent an applicant from being considered for receipt of the Judy K Black Award.

(2) Please also submit a complete manuscript that clearly reflects data-based, meta-analytic, or theory development research related to health behavior through the standard peer review process conducted by the American Journal of Health Behavior (AJHB).

a. The paper should not have been previously published, in whole or part, or be currently under review for publication to be considered.

b. Please use the official AJHB website for author instructions and access to the manuscript submission system: http://www.ajhb.org/.

 

Every manuscript submitted through the application process will receive a standard review by AJHB reviewers. All applicants will receive reviewers’ feedback and will be considered for regular publication within the Journal even if the applicant is not selected as the Judy K Black Award recipient. The Judy K Black Award recipient will have his/her AJHB publication fees waived upon acceptance of the manuscript and completion of conference participation.

The award recipient will be notified mid to late January, after which the manuscript will continue through the AJHB review process to be published within 2 issues of that year’s AAHB annual conference after full acceptance with the AJHB.

The Judy K Black Award recipient is expected to attend the award ceremony at the AAHB Annual Meeting and present the manuscript as a poster presentation (see NOTE below) during the conference in order to receive all benefits. The AAHB conference fee will be waived for the Judy K Black Award recipient for that year.

IMPORTANT NOTE:  To have your abstract reviewed for presentation at the AAHB annual conference individuals being considered for the Judy Black Award will ALSO need to:

  • Submit an abstract that clearly reflects data-based, meta-analytic, or theory development research related to health behavior to be adjudicated as part of the standard conference abstract solicitation process (Due November 4th).
  • If abstracts are not submitted separately by the abstract deadline, Judy K Black Award submissions will not be considered for presentation at the upcoming AAHB conference. Please see the AAHB conference website for abstract submission details (Abstract Submission Process Now Closed).
